Duration: approx. 17 minutes
The Vocal Quartets op. 52 can be performed either by a mixed choir or a vocal quartet; mixed forms are also possible. The composition is very varied and colourful. Stylistically it stands roughly between Johannes Brahms and Richard Strauss; it is among the composer's best works and can easily be compared to Johannes Brahms' Liebeslieder Waltzes, which have certainly influenced the composition. As the instrumentation is identical with that of the much more widely known work of Brahms, these Vocal Quartets are an ideal complement to the Liebeslieder Waltzes.
Compact Disc:
The Vocal Quartets op. 52 were recorded together with the Lenz- und Liebeslieder op. 72 and the Vocal Quartets op. 69 by Hans Huber on the CD «Hans Huber, Chorwerke» (Acanthus Music ACM 001).
